The Lake was erected 'Sir William Henry Gregory" in 1873 during the period of British Ceylon (1815-1948). 'Sir William Henry Gregory' is the 14th British governor of British Ceylon (1872-1877). During the period of the British Ceylon, Lake Gregory area is a well-known place for water sports and recreational activities. The lake covered 91.2 hectares and surface elevation is 1874m above the sea level.

In the present day, the area surrounding Lake Gregory is the most prominent attraction in the area and many travelers use to relax in the evening and see the hill station sunset in the Gregory lake park.
