The city was founded by
Samuel Baker's period of British Ceylon. A city in the hill country
of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The Nuwaraeliya is 180km away from the
Colombo city. Its name means "city on the plain (table land)" or
"city of light" It is at an altitude of 1,868m and is considered to
be the most popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka. The city is overlooked
by Pidurutalagala the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Nuwaraeliya is known
for its temperate, cool climate- the coolest area in Sri Lanka, Some people
called "Little England" because of the cold weather.
This city surrounded many

To reach Nuwaraeliya from
Colombo you can take buses, Hired vehicle, Tuk Tuk, Train(only to Nanuoya, from
Nanuoya you have to take a bus or Tuk Tuk to reach Nuwaraeliya) or seaplane
(Amphibious aircraft)
You can grab the many local
restaurants around the city area to eat food. All local restaurants have Sri
Lankan cuisines and Sri Lankan short-eat foods. In Tourist guest houses and
hotels you can enjoy Sri Lankan Cuisines, Indian cuisines, European menus (Some
guest house and hotels aren't serving foreign cuisines).
Season and functions
The town really comes alive in April for the Sinhalese &
Tamil New year. It is difficult to find accommodation during the period of Sri
Lankans' new year holiday and also prices can be raised compared to the normal
days. Annually the festive season starts in mid-April and runs to late-April.
Main attractions during April include motor and horse racing events. This
event, being run since 1934. And the flower show runs till the end of the month
it helps gain the attraction of Nuwaraeliya.
The town's attractions include the Victoria park, golf course,
and Lake Gregory. Victoria Park is an attractive and well-used oasis It's
popular with bird watchers. Nuwaraeliya city is a base for travels to the
Horton plains National park. This is a key wildlife area of an open grassy
woodland. The plains have a well-visited tourist attraction at the world's end:
a sheer precipice with a 1050m let fall. The return walk passes the scenic
Baker's falls. Early morning visits are best, both to see the wildlife and to
view World's End before mists close in during the later part of the morning
The slow-growing tea bushes of this highland region produce some of the world's best oranges pekoe tea. Several tea factories around Nuwaraeliya offer guided tours of tea production, the opportunity to taste a sample and purchase their products.
